ESV Web Service Now Has Keyless Option

Maybe you?Tve considered using the ESV web service (which lets you show the text of the ESV on your site) but don?Tt want to go through the hassle of applying for a key. You no longer have to.You can now use the key ?oIP? (without the quotes) for your web service queries. This key limits you to 500 requests per IP address per day. A sample query: John 3:16.Using the key requires that you agree to the web service terms and conditions. Of particular note:Your use must be noncommercial: you may not make money, directly or indirectly, from the ESV text.Your website (if you?Tre using the text on a website) must primarily be noncommercial. Personal and church websites are usually OK.An ESV copyright notice must appear somewhere on your site or in your application. You may not locally store more than 500 consecutive verses or half of any book of the Bible. You could run into access limits if you make a lot of queries or if your website shares an IP address with other websites. Feel free to request a personal key (webmaster@gnpcb.org) in that case. Those of you who have current keys don?Tt need to make any changes; your keys will continue to work.Read more about the API (technical document). We hope this new approach will lead to exciting new applications for the ESV. Please let us know (blog@esv.org) if you build something nifty so we can share it with our readers. more...

Improved WordPress Verse of the Day Plugin

The plugins keep coming. Glenn Slaven has released a new version of his Verse of the Day WordPress plugin. It lets you show a daily verse from the ESV (or any Bible version that has a VOTD RSS feed) on your blog and takes care of all the updating automatically. The new version does away with the need for troublesome temporary files and for tweaking the code when you want to make a change. It also uses a new options page to give you more control over how the plugin works. We plan to use this plugin on the ESV blog. more...

Daily Light Now Available as RSS Feed

Chris Harrison emailed us a good question about why Crossway offers Bible reading plans as RSS feeds but not the ESV version of the devotional Daily Light on the Daily Path that?Ts also available on the site. The answer, it turns out, is that there wasn?Tt a good reason. We?Tll let Chris take it from here:A couple of days ago, I emailed the webmaster over at Good News Publishers/Crossway Books about the availability of an RSS feed for the ?oDaily Light on the Daily Path? devotional they have available online (and in print). I’m happy to report that as of this morning, an RSS feed is now available. The URLsRSS feed.Read it online.Buy the printed version.About Daily LightFor over a century, Daily Light on the Daily Path has been a favorite devotional book of those who realize the tremendous benefit of reading and praying Scripture. Originally printed in the mid-1800s, Daily Light was born out of the devout faith of Samuel Bagster, a British bookstore owner determined to share his faith with his twelve children. The Bagsters?T daily practice of reading Scripture together, then connecting the day?Ts verses with other passages, inspired one of the children to compile their devotions for publication. The family discussed and prayed over the selection and arrangement of each verse until they were convinced that no further improvement could be made. After two years of prayer and consideration, the devotions were printed in two volumes for morning and evening reading. more...

What Is Propitiation?

Adrian Ow has a good post explaining the definition of propitiation:Simply spelt out, it speaks of mending the relationship with that someone who’s angry by something you did. This brings out a new dimension that someone, somewhere is angry. And in the context of the Bible, ‘propitiation’ paints a clear picture that God is angry with us. Why? Sin. Sin absolutely repulses God. Sin absolutely disgraces God’s holy name. In fact, from Rom 3:23 (look above), sin is to ?ofall short of God’s glory?. Therefore, angry is too… mild a word to begin describing God’s attitude toward sin. Rather, the word ‘Wrath’ is used to describe this strong, holy, divine anger that God has toward sin. Therefore, ?~Propitiation?T brings forth the point that God?Ts wrath is against all man because of how they have desecrated his glory. And God’s holiness, justice and righteousness disallows sin to be let off scot-free….In a nutshell, this is propitiation: God averting his wrath toward man through the death of His Son.Adrian also looks at how various translations translate 1 John 2:2. (?oHe is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world.?) Adrian thinks that the ESV and others get it right when they use the English word propitiation here. The ESV Preface says that the ESV ?oretains theological terminology—words such as? propitiation—because of their central importance for Christian doctrine and also because the underlying Greek words were already becoming key words and technical terms in New Testament times.?For another view, see the NET Bible?Ts footnote to 1 John 2:2. more...

Bill Shakespeare's Female Jesus

Darlings, a new version of “Bible” is out from LBI (Law and Business Institute?!?) which depicts God as a woman and it even has a female Jesus. It’s long title is Judith Christ of Nazareth: the Gospels of the Bible Corrected to Reflect That Jesus Christ Was a Woman, Extracted from Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. And it gets even better, as LBI’s spokesperson and VP is named Billie Shakespeare. You can read more about this at Agape Press. And by the way, God in the Hebrew Bible is clearly male. Catholic Evolution is Like Evolving

So this dude named Cardinal Christoph Schönborn, the archbishop of Vienna, and buddy of Pope Benedict XVI, recently wrote in an op-ed for the NY Times things like “Evolution in the sense of common ancestry might be true, but evolution in the neo-Darwinian sense - an unguided, unplanned process of random variation and natural selection - is not.”You can read about Schönborn’s statement and the Catholic Church’s more narrowly defined stance on the issue of evolution here. Sanctification and the Bible Knowledge 5th Newsletter

This is now our 5th official newsletter. Since our last newsletter, we have added 2 new articles and an additional section added in the Bible article page.1. The Unpardonable Sin - Blasphemy Against the Holy SpiritI’ll give you the two main verses where Jesus tells the Scribes and Pharisees exactly what this sin as they were the first ones to have officially committed this sin after Jesus tells them exactly what it is.I’ll then give you some commentary as to how it may apply to all of us in this day and age. Many Bible scholars and commentators do not think that this sin can be committed to day - but others do.There are some Christians who feel that that may have committed this sin due to some wrestling matches they may have with the Lord over certain issues in their life. I’ll show you how some of this thinking is wrong and that they are nowhere close to having had committed this sin by honing on exactly what the word blasphemy really means.2. New Section Added -SanctificationWe recently made an adjustment on the Bible articles page. I had someone write in asking when I was going to do part 2 of an article titled: “Mindset: Being Transformed by the Renewing of your Mind” in the Bible Basics page. After looking at all of the power verses relating to this topic - I realized that there was no way I could get all of them into one article. Due to the extreme importance of these verses, we decided to add a separate section called “Sanctification” in the Bible Articles page. Themindset article has now been transferred to that section.I will be doing individual articles on the rest of the power verses having do with sanctification and being transformed by the renewing of our minds. This is God’s ultimate aim for us and all of these principles need to have their own individual article due to the power that is on each one of them.I went ahead and drew up the first new article for this section titled “Sanctification.” In this article, I give you the main verses that deal with the Lord wanting all of us to enter into this sanctification process. Many of God’s prophets today are getting major prophecies from the Lord that He is now calling His people back to repentance, holiness and righteous living. Many of the articles I will be doing in this section will be giving you many of the major verses from the Bible showing you exactly what it is God is looking for from each one of us in this area. We will continue to keep you updated with these newsletters as we continue to add new articles and new sections to our site.God Bless,Michael Bradley more...

God Will Guide Your Steps

For those of you who are looking for direction in your life - the Bible makes it very clear that it is the job of God the Father to guide your steps in this life. If God is not directing your steps and where you should be going in this life - then you are aimlessly wandering with no sense of direction and purpose in your life.We have an article in our site titled “God will Guide Your Steps.” This article is in the “Bible Basics” section of our site. In this article we give you all of the main Scripture verses specifically showing you that it is the job of God the Father through the Holy Spirit to guide your steps in this life in the direction and path they want it to go in.Once you are willing to come into a full surrender with the Lord - then the next step is to realize that God will now guide your steps in this life. If you fully surrender your entire life into the hands of God the Father - but don’t learn to follow the leadings of the Holy Spirit as to exactly how to get where They want you to go - then you will never make it to the top of the mountain that They have in store for you to climb in this life. more...

Seeking after the Knowledge of God

We just put up a new article on the site titled “Seeking after the Knowledge of God.” In this article, I give you all the main verses from Scripture that deal with the extreme importance that each and every Christian seek after the knowledge of God for their lives. God the Father makes some very powerful and profound statements in some of these verses. He says that seeking after the knowledge of God in your life is more important than anything else you can desire in this life - including all of the rubies, gold, silver and material things of this world. The reason for this is because God cannot cause you to spiritually grow and mature in Him unless you have the knowledge that will lead to this growth to occur in the first place.Nothing will stimulate your mind and emotions more than seeking after the knowledge on something that you may be interested in or be very passionate about. The Bible says that in God the Father and His Son Jesus Christ are hidden all the treasures of knowledge - and that the Holy Spirit, who literally lives on the inside of each Christian, will supernaturally transmit the knowledge of God direct to us on anything that we will need God’s help on in this life. These verses are profound and they are major door openers for those who are willing to embark on this knowledge journey with the Lord.Michael Bradley more...
